The Dutch design furniture maker Pastoe turns 100 this year. To mark its anniversary, NAi010 Publishers is bringing out Pastoe: 100 Years of Design Innovation. The book, by the design critic Gert Staal and the curator Anne van der Zwaag, surveys the past century and looks ahead with a contemporary take on homes, interior and design.

A century of innovative furniture
Made possible in part by Premsela, Pastoe will help to bring Dutch design history to the attention of the general public. The Dutch edition will be launched on Saturday 23 February at the opening of the Kunsthal’s comprehensive exhibition Like Pastoe: 100 Years of Design Innovation. The Rotterdam museum will host the show through Sunday 2 June. An English version will be presented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan on Saturday 13 April, Pastoe’s official birthday.

Pastoe has designed a special cabinet to mark its anniversary. Renowned Dutch and foreign designers will also contribute to the celebrations in various ways.

Curator Anne van der Zwaag has divided the exhibition according to three themes. The history section will encompass furniture, sketches, books, photographs, posters and advertisements from the Pastoe collection, selected by people including the artist Krijn de Koning. The environment section will display the company’s vision of architectural space. Architect Anne Holtrop and De Koning are designing three pavilions, which will vary in form, colour, materials and use of light. Pastoe pieces from various periods will be grouped in each pavilion. The exhibition’s innovation section will showcase new objects and ideas by the designers Konstantin Grcic and Naoto Fukasawa, the architect Claudio Silvestrin and the photographers Scheltens & Abbenes.
